3 Things We Are Thankful for This Year

Thanksgiving is likely the most resilient of holidays.

While it surely looks and feels different this year, its core message never wavers.

And, likely because it is followed by a mad shopping rush, it has managed to remain relatively free of commercialism.

For that we can all be grateful.

Thanksgiving is an institution that has stood the test of time. And as we think about what we’re grateful for this year, we wanted to reflect on three enduring institutions that have helped our country navigate the pandemic:

Nonprofits – Never in our lifetimes have so many nonprofits faced so many challenges. And never before have they stepped up in such remarkable ways, with ever-dwindling funding and resources. Whether it’s getting food to the hungry, making sure the neediest among us have warm coats this winter, or helping struggling artists make ends meet, nonprofits are doing the good work that provides both help and hope. Don’t forget to keep your favorite nonprofit in mind on Giving Tuesday!

Community Foundations – It’s remarkable to think that the community foundation model is more than a century old, but remains more relevant and vital with each passing year. As we face monumental challenges such as Covid-19 and the quest for racial equity, it’s incredibly reassuring to know these foundations have helped communities survive and thrive through the Great Depression, world wars, the Great Recession, and countless other national and local crises.

They are the bedrock of our communities and will be there to lead us to better days ahead.

Local media – Media-bashing is all the rage these days, but amid the noise, local newspapers, television and radio stations continue to bring relevant news to their audiences amid massive challenges. Having a strong local news presence is vital to our democracy. We appreciate all those local journalists who are committed to their craft, despite low pay, ongoing uncertainty, and an often hostile public.

Of course, we are also forever grateful to our clients and the readers of Thought Leadership Weekly. We appreciate your support.

Happy Thanksgiving!
