Some Good News About Good News

“The media never covers good news stories.”

No doubt you’ve heard this lament. It’s one I’ve been reminded of recently when I have come across those feel-good LinkedIn posts about everyday heroes and people overcoming adversity.

Inevitably, it doesn't take much scrolling through the comments before you start seeing the tired refrain along the lines of "you'll never see stories like this covered by the mainstream media!"

The irony, of course, is that a quick Google search will reveal that most -- if not all -- of these stories originated in the media. Without the mainstream media, we likely wouldn’t know about any of these inspiring tales.

Some appeared in local newspapers. Others got exposure from major national media outlets such as The New York Times, CNN, or one of the major networks.

The reality is that the media covers a ton of good news – and is hungry for more.

I've yet to meet a reporter or editor who doesn't jump at the chance to cover an inspiring or uplifting story.

And, no doubt, those stories exist within your organization and the work you do – whether you’re a nonprofit with a mission or a business serving customers.

So don’t buy into the false narrative that the media doesn’t want stories that inspire, uplift or simply generate a laugh or a smile. If you take the time to look for those stories in the course of your work, you’ll undoubtedly find some gems.

And there are lots of journalists out there ready to give them a good polish.

Despite what you may read on LinkedIn.
