Three Steps to Mastering the Art of Media Interviews

November 2, 2023

By: Lauren Stewart

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had the good fortune of getting several of our Turn Two clients booked for media interviews. And with each one I have been reminded of the value of being as prepared as possible for the experience.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a newcomer when it comes to talking to the media, the time you spend preparing and practicing can make all the difference in how you come across to your audience – and how your message is received.

Here are three steps you can take before your next media interview to ensure your success:

1. Understand Your Audience and Message

Before stepping in front of the camera or microphone, it’s crucial to understand your audience and your key message. Who is the intended audience for this interview? What do they already know, and what do you want them to take away from your interview? Tailor your message to fit the audience’s needs and expectations. If you’re speaking to a broad audience, avoid industry jargon and keep your message simple and relatable. If it’s a niche audience, delve into the specifics and provide more in-depth information.

Pro Tip: Develop clear and concise messaging that you want to convey during the interview. Your key talking points should be simple, memorable and aligned with your overall objectives.

2. Prepare + Rehearse

Preparation is the key to a successful media interview. Start by researching the interviewer and the outlet they represent. Understand their style and the type of questions they typically ask. This will help you anticipate what comes up during the interview and prepare your responses accordingly.

Create a list of potential questions and practice your answers. Focus on delivering your key message and addressing the needs of your audience. It’s essential to stay on message while remaining flexible to adapt to unexpected questions or changes in the conversation.

Rehearsing your responses is equally important. You want to sound confident - and natural - during the interview, so practice speaking clearly and concisely.

Pro Tip: If possible, conduct mock interviews with a colleague or media trainer to get feedback and refine your delivery.

3. Manage Your Image + Body Language

For on-camera interviews, image and body language can influence how your message is perceived. Dress appropriately for the interview, considering the audience and the nature of the conversation. Your appearance should be in alignment with your message and the values you wish to convey.

During the interview, pay attention to your body language. Maintain eye contact with the interviewer, and avoid distracting habits like fidgeting or excessive hand gestures. Sit up straight and use open, welcoming gestures to engage with the audience. Remember to smile and project confidence, even if you’re feeling nervous.

Pro Tip: Feeling butterflies? Work with it to increase your energy and sharpen your focus! Mistakes happen when you’re complacent.

By following these three essential steps, you can increase your chances of delivering a successful and impactful media interview that resonates with your audience and furthers your objectives. Whether you’re promoting your organization, sharing your expertise or advocating for a cause, a well-executed media interview cna be a powerful tool for reaching your goals.
