Why Gratitude Matters in Communications

With Thanksgiving week upon us, I planned to write a piece on how a core pillar of great leadership communications is showing genuine appreciation.

Then I stumbled across a LinkedIn post that did my work for me. It came from Celie O’Neil-Hart, who works in executive communications at Pinterest.

Here’s what she had to say:

Every time my editor, Gregory Bell, gives me feedback on a draft, he opens with “thank you.”

It’s always the first comment in the doc. Even when he’s busy. Even when it’s just my job. Even when what I wrote isn’t very good yet.

Greg’s gratitude is kind. But it’s also smart. When he opens with thanks, I’m more open to his edits. I’m reminded that we’re on the same team, driving toward the same goal. I’m excited to pick up the pen and get to work.

Gratitude is magic in management. It can make anybody feel like somebody.

Indeed gratitude is not just a management tool. It can work magic.

A simple thank you can open many doors and closes none.

From our team, thanks for reading each week, and have a great holiday.

One more thought…

Gratitude and giving were on full display this week as one of Turn Two’s clients, One Warm Coat, held a successful coat drive in Erie Pa.

Working closely with ABC-affiliate WJET-TV, we built a media partnership that led to the collection of more than 700 coats that were distributed on Monday morning to those in need. It was an awesome way to kick off Thanksgiving week.
