How 5 Community Foundations Are Celebrating Black History Month

Black History Month arrived this year with new urgency amid the national pushback against diversity and equity initiatives and as some government agencies and corporations are dialing back or abandoning efforts to publicly acknowledge or celebrate the month.
Yet scores of social good organizations are continuing their efforts to recognize the contributions of Black Americans — and, in some cases, ramping up their storytelling.
This is certainly true among community foundations, many of which are centering their February communications on elevating local grantmaking, supporting community events, and promoting efforts that highlight Black philanthropy.
Here’s a look at how some community foundations are celebrating Black History month:
The Miami Foundation (Florida)
This year marks the 10th anniversary of The Miami Foundation's State of Black Philanthropy, which has celebrated the legacies of Black leaders, investing in diverse talent, supporting Black-owned businesses, and more.
Community Foundation of Greater Flint (Michigan)
Alexandria Dawson, vice president of marketing and communications at the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, participated in the Flint & Genesee Group Young Professionals Black History Month panel, which featured young leaders doing great work locally and whose positive contributions of today are building a better tomorrow.
Community Foundation of Greater New Haven (Connecticut)
The foundation created a Black Futures Fund to advance racial equity and tackle structures that contribute to racial disparities by supporting Black-led organizations and leadership, grassroots advocacy, including emerging voices, ideas and collaborations on the front lines of challenging historical and cultural attitudes.
Black Belt Community Foundation (Alabama)
The Black Belt Community Foundation this month launched its 'Acknowledge the Greatness' campaign, which tells local stories of strength that come from the Alabama Black Belt. Spotlights include local historical figures, foundation staff, and local business owners.
California Community Foundation
The California Community Foundation in Los Angeles is recognizing the significant role Black churches have played in local disaster relief efforts in response to the Palisades Wildfires through its social media channels.
