A Look Into Your April Communications Calendar
March 27, 2025
April arrives next Tuesday, bringing blooming flowers, spring showers, and more daylight hours.
It also promises a busy calendar of key dates, events, and anticipated news stories that could impact your organization or provide opportunities to connect with key audiences.
Let’s dig right in. Here's your guide to communicating in April:
April 1: April Fool’s Day.
Consider yourself warned.
April 1: Florida holds two special elections for vacant U.S. House seats.
These closely watched races will offer some clues into how voters view the Trump Administration's agenda.
April 2: Supreme Court Case Alert
Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic will address the question of whether there’s a legal path to maintaining Planned Parenthood as a healthcare provider, even if a state tries to cut off funding.
What’s at stake: The outcome could significantly impact Medicaid funding and access to reproductive healthcare services nationwide.
April 10: Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards
The Cleveland Foundation will announce the winners of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards (AWBA), which honors literature that confronts racism and explores diversity. The long-standing award is marking its 90th year.
The announcement coincides with National Library Week (April 7-13) and connects with other book-themed dates this month: World Book Day (April 23), and Independent Bookstore Day (April 26).
All offer opportunities to celebrate the power of the written word and the importance of free speech.
April 11: National Day of Silence
National Day of Silence aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ students in schools and to advocate for their inclusion and dignity. Students and allies take a vow of silence, using written communication instead, to highlight the silencing and erasure of LGBTQ+ students and protest harassment and discrimination.
April 11-17: Black Maternal Health Week
Black Maternal Health Week aims to raise awareness about the disparities in maternal health outcomes as well as promote action and advocate for policies and programs that improve the health and well-being of Black mothers. Fairfield County’s Community Foundation offers a great blueprint for proactively addressing this pressing issue.
April 12 - April 20: Passover
Starting at sundown on April 12, Passover commemorates the Israelites' liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt. It is celebrated with a week-long festival, including a traditional Seder (a ceremonial meal), the removal of leavened products (chametz), and the retelling of the Exodus story, marking the journey from slavery to freedom.
April 15: Tax Day
Amid the deadline stress, it’s an opportunity to highlight how charitable giving can also carry tax benefits for those who give.
April 20: Easter
Easter celebrates the resurrection of Christ and serves as a time of joy, feasting, and reflection on the event that is central to Christian faith. For some it’s also an opportunity to participate in an egg hunt and eat some sweet treats.
April 20 - April 26: National Volunteer Week
Kicking off with Volunteer Recognition Day on April 20, National Volunteer Week recognizes volunteers for their contributions and community service. This is the perfect opportunity to shout out volunteers who have served your organization and highlight upcoming volunteer opportunities.
April 22: Earth Day
Earth Day arrives with fresh urgency this year amid the ongoing climate crisis and the move to roll back key environmental regulations. April is also Keep American Beautiful Month, and Arbor Day lands on April 25. You have plenty of hooks available to promote your organization’s sustainability efforts, as well as environmental initiatives you support.
April 23: Supreme Court Case Alert
Diamond Alternative Energy, LLC v. EPA will determine if the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has the authority to grant permission to states to set stricter emission standards and whether businesses have the legal right to challenge such decisions when they affect their operations.
What’s at stake: The outcome could determine the EPA’s and states' authority to set environmental standards and have a serious impact on environmental regulations.
April 24: Bring Your Kid To Work Day
Bring Your Kid to Work Day encourages parents to give their children a glimpse into the working world and explore different career paths. It's also a great opportunity to share career development programs your organization supports.
April 28: Supreme Court Case Alert
A. J. T. v. Osseo Area Schools will address whether students with disabilities must meet a strict “bad faith or gross misjudgment standard” to seek relief for educational discrimination under the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Rehabilitation Act.
What’s at stake: The outcome could have significant implications for the rights of students with disabilities in educational settings nationwide.
April 30: National Prepareathon! Day
National Prepareathon! Day serves as a great reminder that preparation pays off in times of crisis.
